Looking for a real challenge? Walk across three different countries along the Lake Constance circular trail.

This tour is located in the area of a road block and is therefore closed. Current information

The 270 km hiking route passes three national borders. For a complete tour by foot you definetely need to plan more days as on a bike tour. Skilled walkers should spend at least 8-10 days. Who, on the other hand, wants to visit the numberless attractions, have some rest along the lake shore or enjoy the spas and thermes, should remain at least two weeks.

Author’s recommendation

Around the lake there are world-class museums, castle and gardens, funiculars and all sorts of lidos. Among them you can discover the real classics, such as the Flower Island Mainau or the Zeppelin Museum and the UNESCO World Heritage sites. We suggest taking enough time to enjoy them! User

Turn-by-turn directions

The hiking route goes all around Lake Constance. Although the path is not always directly on the coast the route often leads to particularly nice paths in the surrounded countryside or above the lake. The main path is continuous and indicated at the national borders. The signal is a white sign with an open black circle coloured in blue.

Possible stages

Around the Überlinger See

  • Constance – Bodman (26km)
  • Bodman – Uhldingen (25 km)

 Around the Obersee

  • Uhldingen – Friedrichshafen (26 km)
  • Friedrichshafen – Lindau (25 km)
  • Lindau – Rheineck (33 km)
  • Rheineck – Romanshorn (27 km)
  • Romanshorn – Kreuzlingen (21 km)

 Around the Untersee

  • Kreuzlingen – Steckborn (17 km)
  • Steckborn – Stein am Rhein (12 km)
  • Stein am Rhein – Radolfzell (25 km)
  • Raolfzell – Konstanz (28 km)

Shorten the route:

The 270 km route can of course be shortened at own discretion. The route section around the Überlinger See, for example, can be bypassed with the car ferry Constance – Meersburg. The route around the Untersee can also be bypassed at own discretion, by going from Kreuzlingen directly to Constance and continuing until Bodman-Ludwigshafen. Some single routes, during summer, can be bypassed by taking the Lake Constance boats and all year long by taking the car ferries, trains and busses. Basically it's also possible to make some day trips, coming back to the same place; Lake Constance boats and public transports can make this easier.

Public transport

Public transport friendly

Buses, trains, ferries, boats (only in summer) and remote buses link the cities around the lake. This always ensures the abbreviation of the route.

Getting there

Lake Constance lies in the heart of Europe. Many motorways lead here directly: The A81 and A96 in Germany, A14 in Austria, A1, A4, A7 and A13 in Switzerland. Caution: on the motorways in Austria and Switzerland a tax sticker (“Vignette”) is required. Lake Constance can be reached by direct connections from many cities: from Karlsruhe, Munich and Stuttgart in Germany. From Zurich, Basel and Innsbruck in Switzerland and Austria. Lots of long distance bus lines offer direct connections from numerous European cities to e.g. Constance, Friedrichshafen, Lindau, Bregenz and St. Gallen.

Parking in the city centre of Constance is weekends particularly difficult. Outside the city centre there are lots of parking facilities.

Arrival by train, car, foot or bike
